What are the names of addition?

The numbers in an addition problem are called the addends and the answer to the addition equation is called the sum.  Addition can also be called adding or add, total, sum, plus, and combine.  It is important for your child to know that addition means to combine numbers, especially as they advance to the opposite or inverse operation of addition which is subtraction.  The plus (+) sign is used to show that two number are being added together in an addition.
