How do you teach children to read words?

Teaching children to read words is the next step in teaching reading after they can identify alphabet letters and their sounds. Then children can be introduced to sight words, words most likely used in their conversational English and most commonly found in beginning reading materials. Having many opportunities to see the words in print will reinforce the words. You can guide the child through seeing and saying the word, underlining the word, spelling the word, and writing the word to help with reading the word. Once “learned”, the word can be added to another word to make a phrase/ sentence.
