What is the subtraction method?

Students can use a subtraction chart as a method of finding the difference between two numbers. The minuend numbers are shown across the top of the table, and the subtrahend numbers are shown down the left-hand side of the table. The number at the intersection of the minuend and subtrahend is the difference or solution to the equation. In the example of 10 – 3 = 8, your student would locate the 10 (the minuend) at the top of the chart and then move down the 10 column until they reach the 3 (the subtrahend) row. The number 8 at that intersection is the answer.
